ELLLO: English Listening Lesson Library Online

Hi, Beijing colleagues. Today I am excited to introduce a marvelous website for English listening practice. It is elllo (https://elllo.org/english/).

On elllo, there are extraordinarily rich natural English conversations in different accents all over the world. The videos and audios on this platform are recorded by both NS and NNS speakers, which makes this learning website very useful for TOEFL learners. As we know, different accents listening material are included in TOEFL tests. Our students who are familiar with American accents often complain about, for instance, Indian accents in TOEFL tests. From this perspective, the listening materials of diverse accents on elllo website are excellent exercises for our students.

What’s more, besides test-oriented aims, we should bear in mind that the TOEFL training is also to make students be equipped with capabilities for surviving exotic and academic environment overseas. Our students must grasp good level of ability for comprehending English of different accents so that they are able to communicate with teachers and students from various corners of the world. From this perspective, English listening lessons on elllo platform provide a great way for our students to hear real, natural English.

Most listening lessons on elllo are between 3 and 5 minutes. Each lesson comes with a script, audio/video, vocabulary support and a quiz. It offers a wide range of topics, including weather, health, sports, animals, etc. These topics are also covered within TOEFL speaking and writing tests. Thus, learning these listening lessons are also perfect opportunities for natural English input and preparing for TOEFL speaking and writing tests.

However, most of materials on elllo are about daily-life topics and students can hardly get access to academic topic materials here. Since parts of listening materials in TOEFL test are about academic topics, we should attach importance to exercises on academic English on the part of students. But to some extent, elllo website has already satisfied most of our students who desire to get access to natural English for daily life.

🙋Beijing colleagues😀 Here is an extra video that I want to share with you. It shows you five secrets of native speakers' listening skills. Among them, the one that impress me most is that our students should hold a can-do attitude towards English.
